Postfix

w00t! I finally got the Postfix MTA running on my home network! I was using qmail on my old faithful Slackware 9.0 router, decided against using it again since it was a bit complex for my needs. Postfix is simple, very configurable, and lets me use a MySQL database for all of my virtual e-mail clients!

Unfortunately, like most Linux MTA’s, documentation and tutorials that somebody with no formal knowledge of e-mail servers are a bit hard to find. After reading nearly all of the Postfix docs and several random tutorials and howto’s, I finally got a setup that works perfectly for my needs. And I’ll be adding server-side spam

Dead iPod

It really sucks when all of a sudden your digital music player just goes belly up.

My iPod mini did just that Friday evening. It had a good life from 8th June 2005 until 16th February 2007. Of course, I’m pretty sure that I was the direct cause of its demise.

I had the mini in my back pocket and I sat down. The hold switch was activated so that the key press wouldn’t stop the music. When I removed the mini from my pocket, the forward and play/pause buttons where stuck in the ‘pressed’ position. It seemed that the buttons were caught on the aluminum case. I gently taped

Boston, Massachusetts – Dumbest city … ever.

Or at least it seems to house some of the dumbest people ever. The first on that list would probably have to be Howie Carr. What a tool.

The only exception to the Mass-holes would have to be Tom and Ray Magliozzi – they are cool.

Howie has written a poor excuse for News & Opinion journalism titled “Joke’s on terror-slacker scare ‘Borat’ now.”

Howie, I like ATHF, I’m gainfully employed, I don’t live with my mom, I don’t wear a baseball cap, and I don’t have any tattoos. I’m sorry that pop culture and technology is over your head and most of the Boston public. But don’t over-hype a

Five Things You Didn't Know About Me

I dislike memes that are propagated online in this fashion. I can’t count.

Thanks!

11h's first fabbed PCB!

Finally! 11h has created a professional looking PCB for or current project ‘Party Lights.’ The PCB was fabbed by Gold Phoenix PCB Co.,Ltd through BatchPCB.

The last PCB that we created was a fan controller for Brian’s 240SX. For the fan controller, we used Techniks press-n-peel PCB laser printer transfer sheets. Unfortunately, this method requires LOTS of time and LOTS of patients’. It’s great for students who are low on cash, but have the time and an iron. It’s not really ideal for folks who are looking for something a little longer lasting and nicer looking. Plus, hand drilling the through-hole components or via is a real bother.

For our

Nokia 6133

The Nokia 6133b (T-Mobile branded) phone is probably Nokia’s best series 40 “flip style” phone to date (Disclaimer: I hate flip phones and well likely never own one myself). It essentially has every feature of the Nokia 6230 except most features have been improved in some manner (which makes sense since this is a much newer phone).

But first the story of why we got it … In the middle of the night, while my girlfriend’s Nokia 6101 was charging on the counter with her Japanese charms dangling off the edge of the counter, her cat decided the phone was a play toy. She managed to knock the phone off

Creative Zen:m – sweetness

While on a recent shopping trip at Fry’s in Wilsonville – not Seattle – I decided to purchase a Creative Zen Vision:m.

Unlike the Seattle Fry’s, the Wilsonville store had _every_ media player device in working order. It was great to actually use a product side by side – or at least near by to compare. I was able to compare the Zen Vision:m, Zune, and iPod Video.

The screen clarity, resolution, and brightness of the Zen (or ZVM as it is also known) was far better than the iPod. By the looks of the security devices that Fry’s uses, both the ZVM and iPod have been out on display

X forwarding – my reminder

Every once and a while, I have a brain lapse.

A long time ago, my father showed me how to forward X applications from another system to my localhost with Cygwin.

Unfortunately, between that time and now, I had forgotten what he had showed me.

So, as a reminder for myself, here’s how:

The classic is assumed here:

Cygwin is installed with X. Putty Remote system with X utilities

On the localhost: Start Cygwin then type

$ X -multiwindow & $ export DISPLAY=127.0.0.1:0.0

Start putty:

Under Connection -> SSH -> X11 -> Forwarding Check the ‘Enable X11 forwarding’ In the ‘X display location’, enter: 127.0.0.1:0.0

Open the connection to the

good computer host names

I’m trying to come up with a list of [host] names for my systems that are location independent. The last time I named a server, I named it with the first three letters of the city where I was living. I moved. Now its kind of silly to call the server by the name of the old city.

Here’s the list:

davros

dalek

skaro

tardis

k-9

TimeLord

TheDoctor

wopr

falken

NORAD

DEFCON

TallCedar

tictactoe

Murdoc

I’ll probably be adding to this over time, or maybe not. We’ll see.

Maintenance Notice

In the process of moving 11h.net to a freaking powerful web server (still on my DSL connection though) and reorganizing the 11h.net domain name, some features/images/styles/etc of the blog may be temporarily unavailable.
